The Language of Prayer. It’s a fact that whenever we use the Lord’s Prayer in English, and we don’t have a service order in front of us, we tend to revert to ‘Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name…’. In my experience this practice shows no sign of dying out. In fact all the young people’s groups I pray with still tend to use this older version. The reason is, of course, that the language in which we first learnt our regular prayers will often be the language of prayer for our whole lives. It is because we know them, as we say ‘by heart’.
